Steve continues to work in the NHS and has developed to a Extended Scope Practitioner (ESP). In his new role within the NHS he uses his advanced, highly specialised assessment skills to assess orthopaedic patients. It is the highest clinical role available to Steve at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and shows the hard work that has been dedicated to his profession since his qualification.
In his ESP role Steve is able to request investigations such as MRI scans, ultrasound scans, X-Rays, blood tests and Nerve Conduction studies and is also able to administer steroid injections to help patients manage painful conditions.
This role is working outside the usual role of physiotherapists and has required additional training in interpreting X-Rays, administering injections and interpreting Blood tests. Steve has also benefited from close working with Orthopaedic and Rheumatology consultants. Strong links with colleagues in these professions allows for mutual respect and good communication to ensure the patient pathway is efficient.
Steve describes his role as "very rewarding to be help patients reach a diagnosis and be able to clearly communicate this diagnosis and treatment options to them to allow the patient to make an informed decision on their treatment."
Steve also acts as a mentor to other physiotherapists in the team to ensure high quality care is offered, allowing staff to develop their clinical skills. "This is an important part of working in the team we have at Doncaster and helps all staff to continue their ongoing professional development" said Steve.
